" To Say Convenience Got us into this Mess is the Understatement - of the Century"
Anna Shelander
Founder of the CAD Foundation

This very practical statement showcases the reality that far too many of today’s modern conveniences are contributing to the astronomical uptick in Alzheimer’s cases in developed countries. Below you will learn the different principles that our “Keeping Your Mind – the practical guide to preventing Alzheimer’s” community outreach program addresses.

Ignoring your oral health is too convenient

Prevention Tip #1:  Good Oral Health

After age, periodontal disease is a top risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Skipping dental care can lead to infections and root canals, allowing oral bacteria to enter your bloodstream—potentially reaching the brain. Keep your mouth healthy to help prevent dementia. Prevention Tip #2: Diet

People in “blue zones” live longer, and diet is key. A Mediterranean-style diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods, olive oil, and Omega-3s (like wild fish) can help reduce the risk of dementia and support brain health. Check out our blogpost on this topic

Prevention Tip #3: Sleep

During deep sleep, especially Stages 3 and 4, your brain clears out waste, including proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Poor sleep or late-night screen use can interrupt this process and raise your risk of dementia. To learn more about how sleep has been proven to protect against dementia, think to attend one of our Mind Your Sleep sessions of Keeping Your Mind – the practical guide to preventing Alzheimer’s

Prevention Tip #4: Exercise

Regular exercise improves sleep, supports a healthy weight, and boosts lymphatic clearance. It also increases blood flow to the brain, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Prevention Tip #5: Be Mindful

Shockingly, studies are now determining that Chronic Stress combined with Depression can increase Alzheimer’s Risk by up to 10 times. Which is why our fifth prevention tip is controlling your mind so it doesn’t control you. Depression can be addressed through therapy and Stress can be addressed through Mindful practices that can be learned. A relaxed mind, a positive mood, a hopeful outlook all help to keep your body in a basic, non-acidic state which is disease preventing.
