Why We're Unique: The First Documented Case of Constant Symptom Reversal & Brain Preservation
The Remarkable Story Behind Our Mission
Dr. David E. Crandall, DDS, is quite literally the brain behind the Curing Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation.
When faced with Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Crandall took an extraordinary path. Working with his Minnesota medical team and drawing on the expertise of scientists around the world, he undertook six years of self-experimentation using medications commonly prescribed to treat chronic infections.
The results were remarkable. Despite Alzheimer’s disease being confirmed at autopsy, Dr. Crandall had preserved brain structures typically damaged by the disease—and his cognitive symptoms had improved sufficiently that he was never clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer’s during his lifetime.
His preserved brain now offers researchers an unusual opportunity to investigate what happened, why it happened, and whether his treatment approach holds clues to stopping or reversing Alzheimer’s disease.
Today, the University of Minnesota’s Alzheimer’s Legacy Lab is investigating the potential role of chronic infections in Alzheimer’s disease, building on the scientific questions raised by Dr. Crandall’s experience.
His story is more than the inspiration for our foundation. It is a scientific mystery that deserves an answer—and a reason to believe that a different approach to Alzheimer’s research could lead to meaningful breakthroughs.
We combine bold scientific research with real-world prevention to bring hope for a cure and help for today. From funding the Alzheimer’s Legacy Lab at the University of Minnesota to educating those at risk through our free community outreach program “Keeping Your Mind ~ the practical guide to preventing Alzheimer’s,” we are redefining what’s possible.
