- Outside of age, the greatest risk factor for developing AD is having Periodontal (Gum) Disease.
- Routine Dental Cleanings and exams are a critical way of preventing Alzheimer's Disease because early detection of Periodontal Disease happens during those appointments. Regularly visiting your dental clinic will allow your dentist and hygienist to detect disease early, reduce the disease's impact and possibly help you eradicate it completely.
- Don't forget good home care routines that keep you healthy between trips to the dentist. We will write a blogpost on that Alzheimer's prevention strategy soon. In the meantime, we here at The Curing Alzheimer's Disease Foundation cannot emphasize how critical it is to be taking the following preventative measures, at the appropriate time:
* Brush at least twice daily
* Floss after ever meal
* Gargle with 3% peroxide for 60 seconds up to 3 times a week

- Take an antibiotic before all dental procedures that produce blood. This practice was eliminated 10 years before we began seeing spikes in Alzheimer's cases and we believe this is a direct cause and effect. Therefore, demand that your dentist or doctor provide you with an appropriate "dental premed" for your unique sensitivities. The most common premed is Amoxicillin, but Ampicillin, Penicillin, and clindamycin are common alternatives. These are prescription medications that your provider will manage for you.
- Finally, being proactive with your dental health means you will be able to potentially prevent the need for extractions and root canals - both of which increase your risk of allowing oral bacteria into your blood stream.
