Dedicated to Finding an Alzheimer's Cure
A top Alzheimer's Prevention Strategy - which makes sense...is Exercise. This is because, when we exercise, we increase blood flow which in turn delivers oxygen and nutrients to the brain. So when you pep your step, or walk a mile, or take the stairs instead of the elevator, you are advantaging your body and your mind.
In addition, we found it very interesting to learn that science is finding that Moderate (as opposed to exercise that which causes fatigue) exercise causes neurogenesis. More importantly, the new neuron formation we are seeing with Moderate exercise is localized to the same regions of the brain hardest hit by Alzheimer's Disease. This phenomena gives hope that the brain can make up for lost nervous tissue, and therefore has the potential for creating new connections to old memories lost when their connections are lost through neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.
The take away on employing physical exercise to ward off dementia is to do anything that raises your heart rate for at minimum 13 minutes five times a week. The best exercise to prevent Alzheimer's include:
1) fast walking
2) swimming
3) biking
In addition, Exercise:
Improves your sleep
Improves BMI
Improves lymphatic clearance
